Crete
Crete is a very popular tourist destination for a large part of the western world and as such it has lots of transport facilities, by sea and by air, and lots of different types of accommodation, ranging from luxurious spa resorts to small studios and well organized camping sites.
Iraklio
Hersonissos
At about 15km from the airport and some 25km from the port of Iraklio to the East, Hersonissos is by the sea and has two camping sites and plenty of hotels. The city consists of several small villages and the main tourist destinations of Port Hersonissos, Anissaras and Old Hersonissos. The villages are Koutouloufari, Piscopiano, Anissaras, Potamies, Avdou, Gonies and Kera. These communities form the unified Hersonissos.
The last population count was 4050 citizens, but this does not show the true size of the city because of the many non-resident non-locals living and working here. There are some strong European communities (Dutch, English and so on) which provide the needed diversity for a growing community.
The tourist season (March till November) provides work for residents and incomers - most local residents are seasonal workers in the tourist industry.
The land is fertile though becomes rocky inland near the mountains. Water to the city comes from the famous Mallia springs. There is a new biological treatment plant which is not yet fully operational since the disposed water nets are not fully installed. (source: [1] )
The municipality of Hersonissos has four free wireless hotspot zones, at the municipal port fund, at the public library (cultural center), at the town hall and at the Citizen Service Center. http://www.hersonisos.gr/her21_howto.php?language=el (in Greek)
