At this stage, this page is a list of many things LBWers may choose to do during the course of the LBW. As we get nearer to the event, we will start to put together a time-table for when things might happen collectively, though of course people can always also go off and do things when they want to, as well.

Crete-Specific Activities

Crete can accommodate a large number of different vacation types as it combines vivid night life, antiquities, clear blue sea and nice beaches, mountains and canyons. To mention some of either popular or geek-oriented destinations we have assembled a non-exhaustive list:

  • Samaria gorge, the most popular and well known hiking destination

It has been suggested, though, that there is another, smaller, but much less touristic and much nicer, gorge that is definitely worth a hike. Anyone know more about that?

  • Skinakas university observatory, located at a high mountain one of the best locations in Europe for high quality astronomical observations

  • Knossos and Faistos ruins, these two cities used to be the center of the Minoan civilization:

  • ITE (FORTH): The Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH) is one of the largest research centers of Greece with well - organised facilities and a highly qualified staff. It consists of seven Research Institutes most of which are located in Iraklio.

  • Thira (Santorini): day-cruises form the port of Iraklio to the volcanic island can be arranged.
  • Boutari winery at Skalani village (8Km south of Iraklio), a very modern building with guided tours and wine testing seminars

  • Lassithi Plateau and Diktaion Andron (god Zeus's birthplace according to ancient Greek mythology)

  • Cretaquarium is part of THALASSOKOSMOS (Hellenic Centre for Marine Research), the largest marine research, technology and entertainment complex in the Mediterranean. It is situated 15Km east of Iraklio on the way to Hersonissos, in Gouves

  • The Crete Golf Club in Hersonissos is located approximately 24 km east of the International Airport `Nikos Kazantzakis` of Heraklion and 7 km south of the famous summer holiday destination of Hersonissos.

And of course one can do water sports (like scuba diving, canoeing, jet-skiing, windsurfing, etc) at every organized beach (including Hersonissos)
